Early Head Start
Ms. Yessica Nolazco-Puente

For Early Head Start for the following week we will be doing Brown Bear Brown Bear.  When reading the book the parents will show the picture to their child and describe what they see. For the older ones the parent will have one set of the pictures and then the child will match with the one that the parent has. We'll also be doing the food experiment for the month with the same animals, they will be hiding in the oatmeal. Parents and children will describe the texture and how it smells to the child.

We have been learning about all the properties of snow and what we do in the winter weather.  We have been bringing the gingerbread theme into our classroom.  We will be trying new recipes for smoothies, gingerbreadmen, corn cakes, and homemade playdough.  The children are really enjoying learning Nursery Rhymes and beat to songs on the interactive Smartboard.  Have them sing Bingo to you or A Chubby Little Snowman.

Because of the cold and flu season, we are studying germs and how to practice good hygiene to prevent the spreading of germs.

Over the next couple of weeks the afternoon Head Start class will be focusing on spring and plants.  I have set aside a few planting activities and we are hoping that the weather will cooperate and that we will be able to get out and work in our flowerbeds soon.  With some awesome information that I gathered at a recent conference, I’m excited to start working with activities that are more outdoor related.  We are also working very hard on preparations for kindergarten.  We have been really working on our letter recognition as well as our numbers. I’m proud to say that most of the students have their shapes and colors down!  In the next few weeks we will be going on some exciting field trips, including Country Dairy on April 16th, Sand Castles Museum on May 15thand going to West Shore Community College on May 21st to go swimming.  Parents are welcome to come with us as long as the appropriate paperwork is turned in.  This spring will be filled with lots of fun and exciting things to do in the afternoon Head Start Class!

We are glad to be at school after our Spring Break!  The children are looking more and more like kindergarteners in their ability to complete tasks, their interactions and their eagerness to learn!  Springtime is a special time of the year for young learners!

Our focus for this week and next is the weather.  We have “The Beehive Weather Studio” where the children are making forecasts that are recorded on an iPad.  If you would like your child’s forecast emailed to you just send in your email address.  We are involved with experiments about rain and clouds.  We heard a Zoophonics story of why the q and u are together all the time. Ask your child to tell you the story of Queeny Quail and Umber Umbrella Bird.

We were all very excited to be back at school after Spring Break. This week we have been reviewing routines and classroom agreements to make sure that our room is a fun and safe place to be.

We have been reviewing the letters “q” and “n” again this week, along with many other Zoophonics characters that we have met this year. Make sure to review your Zoophonics packet that came home during conferences so that we are all practicing letter recognition and sounds.

Our featured book was “Under the Sea” by Alastair Smith and JudyTatchell.  We are learning about nonfiction books and how they teach us new things.  We are also learning about ocean life and how it is different from the freshwaters here in Michigan.

This week’s activities were about dinosaurs.

We colored a book that says, “I see a ____ dinosaur”.  Each blank had a color word in it and the children had to color coordinate the word with the color of the dinosaur.  Encourage your child to read it to you!

We experimented and made dinosaur eggs.  They turned out really cool.  We made purple, red, green, orange, and blue eggs to explore in the science area.

We also practiced our directional words (above, behind, around) with dinosaurs and their beds.  This was a great activity to help understand directions.

Finally, we used our large muscles in the gym by running, tip toeing, crawling, and hopping to different numbers posted on the gym walls.

It’s been a great week back to Preschool!
